The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the US on five European individuals involved in fighting online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders such as the French president charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions targeted individuals who have been at the heart of efforts to enact laws governing US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce US companies to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated a senior US official online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined the French president in condemning the move.
The bans were imposed this week on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
